“All things considered, there couldn’t conceivably be a more perfect video to accessorize the mood and the lurking grief of the song than the early-2000s VHS clips assembled here. Honest to the point of hurting—and at times, hauntingly invasive—the imagery pulls us into the disheveled quarters of a dissolute twentysomething junkie, complete with an era-exposing asymmetrical haircut. Showing not only the nocturnal ritual of putting on live shows but also the drug use that perhaps feeds the mechanics of idle creative work, a parallel forms between drug addiction and the emotional dependency that we project upon other people; the comfort we seek in the approval we need.”
